Properties of Bronze Alloys

Bronze, a material found in nature for centuries, now meets the metal part needs of many industries. Known also as copper-tin alloy, bronze is a significant alloy of copper. Initially used in the manufacture of weapons, tools, artistic works, and decorations due to its hardness compared to copper, bronze is now utilized in numerous sectors, including automotive and electrical appliances.

Bronze Casting in Precision-Required Areas

Shaping copper alloys like bronze, which are composed of copper with tin or aluminum, is quite challenging. In areas requiring precision production or in alloys that are design-detailed, bronze investment casting is used to achieve products of desired dimensions. Bronze, used in copper-nickel, copper-beryllium, and copper-zinc alloys, is found in different varieties. Aluminum Bronze and Red Bronze are among the most known types. Copper-based alloys containing up to 14% aluminum are referred to as Aluminum Bronze. Al-Bronzes have high mechanical and chemical properties. Their hardness ratings can reach up to 42 – 45 HRC.

Bronze Investment Casting Process

Investment casting is a casting technique that uses wax in the mold creation stage. In this technique, which uses a wax model for molding, the mold cavity is formed as the heated wax melts and leaves the mold. This ancient method, still used today, perfectly shapes not only bronze but also metals like aluminum, iron, and steel. Our systems, which allow for the meticulous shaping of the demanded products, enable the creation of even the smallest parts that would otherwise be impossible to produce. Using the most precise techniques, we melt the bronze alloy and pour it into ceramic molds using wax, thus obtaining new bronze in the desired measurements and dimensions.

Bronze Investment Casting Mold Stage

Wax is used in the molding stage of the bronze investment casting process. A wax sample model of the part to be cast is created. After the wax model is coated with ceramic slurry, the ceramic shell formed is used for the casting process. As a result of this casting, the liquid bronze solidifies and takes the shape of the hollow mold and consequently the part. During this solidification, the metal is separated from the ceramic mold to produce the part. This part, after cleaning and polishing processes, becomes ready for use.

Use of Bronze in Systems Utilizing Seawater

Bronze materials are preferred in systems using seawater. It is also used in environments with low conductivity. The design of molds, runners, and feeders is critical according to the types of bronze investment casting. The raw materials for the liquid metal, the melting furnaces used, and deoxidation are important factors for this material.
